As you all [may or may not] know Deputy Troy Thompson, his wife Yvette, daughters Kayla and Tyra, and his mother Barb were injured in a traffic collision on I-5 on Monday. Everyone continues to improve, including Troy who was the most seriously injured. Troy, Yvette, and Kayla remain hospitalized. Barb and Tyra are resting at a hotel in Modesto provided to the family by the Star 6 Foundation.
The logistics of this tragedy could easily overwhelm the family: Three family members in three separate hospitals in cities that are 80 miles apart. The family/friend support has been tremendous. Relatives and friends are ever present at all three hospitals and the hotel where Barb and Tyra continue to recover.
There is good possibility that Yvette could be released from the hospital in the next day or two. This is wonderful and welcomed news, but will also necessitate additional lodging space in Modesto. Troy is progressing well, but he will likely be hospitalized for an extended period of time. Additionally, family members are regularly commuting to and from Sacramento to visit Kayla at UCD.
I have been contacted by many members of this Department [Sacramento Sheriff's] asking for information on how to help the Thompson family. The best way to support this family right now is through financial donations to the Star 6 Foundation. There is nothing more important to this family than to be together during this time of crisis. Star 6 is in the best position to facilitate financial aid to them. Please visit the Star 6 website to donate at: http://www.star6.org , or mail checks directly to the DSA office at 1700 I Street, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95811.
The Thompson family has been overwhelmed by the show of love and support from the members of this Department and the law enforcement community. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.
